Few writers weave a horror story that rivals those of H.P. Lovecraft's. The people at Bethesda have realized this, and the result is Call of Cthulhu. Fans of the Alone in the Dark series, the games that laid the way for the survival horror genre, will feel at home in this 1920's setting full of cults, monsters, and nightmarish locations.
The lead character is a detective, and in FPS fashion you take him around different levels, uncovering sinister plots by what appears to be Satanist cults. Call of Cthulhu is based on the popular pen and paper RPG, and the unique thing about that is the Sanity Level your character has. The more insane and outrageous things you see, the more of your mind you lose. There is no interface of HUD on the screen, and combat is best avoided at all costs. Instead, you must rely on your wits and outthink your enemies before the advanced AI system tracks you down and has their way with you.
2004 seems like a long way away for this game to be released, but perfection cannot be rushed, and what we've seen of this game so far resembles something close to that. Games like Call of Cthulhu may be replacing horror movies in the near future. Thrilling moments the likes of which have only been seen in games such as Resident Evil are abound in Call of Cthulhu, and production isn't even finished yet. PC and Xbox owners are going to be in for a real treat come the New Year.
