Insecticide is a tongue-in-cheek film noir detective story where the main characters are bugs and not humans. In fact, in this futuristic story, insects are now the dominant race and humans have been reduced to little more than an annoyance to bugs. As in the screenshot, you’ll often see the humanoids in cages. You play as the lovely Detective Chrys Liszt and your partner is the tough-as-nails Roachy Caruthers. Together, you must solve a murder that has occurred at the Nectarola Soft Drink Company, and in doing so, you’ll open up a can of worms – well, a conspiracy anyway. Maybe some worms along the way too, who knows.

You’ll have some platformer elements, along with plenty of adventuring to solve this crime, interrogating suspects and finding clues along the way. Oh yes, and plenty of shooting too. I played the DS version and the gameplay felt very smooth. Although I was chasing a suspect, it was clear where I needed to go and I never found myself wondering what came next.

These bugs don’t play nice. They’ll have plenty of bug-specific weaponry at hand, as well as the ability to create their own organic weapons from the radioactive pollen that abounds. Over 30 colorful characters will be in the game and you’ll have plenty of interaction. As far as the police station goes, think Barney Miller, but with bugs. In a true adventure game sense, you’ll be able to do things like fix Roachy a cup of coffee and a buggy donut before talking to him at the station to soften him up. You’ll also be able to play good cop/bad cop when interrogating victims, uh, I mean suspects.

Insecticide is set to release in Q4 for the DS and the PC and it is being developed by Crackpot Entertainment. If you don’t know who they are yet, you will soon. Crackpot is composed of a slew of folks who worked on games such as Grim Fandango, Sam and Max, Full Throttle, Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Yeah, I thought you might be familiar with those. So if you are looking for a sweet looking adventure game that won’t frustrate, but will keep you guessing and laughing, this one looks like it will fit the bill nicely.
