Resident Evil: Revelations: Jill Sandwich On A Boat

Company: Capcom

Few well-known gaming franchises have undergone a metamorphosis as radical as that of the Resident Evil series. Once the genre pioneer of survival horror (as well as the gold standard), the series with the heavy emphasis on atmosphere and dread is now all about white-knuckle third-person shooting action. This change has brought praise and criticism alike. Resident Evil: Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS looks like it wants to be the middleman between survival horror and action, and my hands-on time with the demo's "pilot version" has left me with high hopes.

Resident Evil: Revelations is set between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Apparently, Chris Redfield and his partner have gone missing, and it's up to Jill Valentine to find them. It's safe to assume that this mission will not be cut-and-dry.

The pilot version of the demo for Resident Evil: Revelations takes place at 9:13 P.M. on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea. It's obvious to the player that Jill Valentine is the player, but the fact that her name is displayed at the bottom of the screen strongly implies that she will not be the only playable character in the full game.

As Jill makes her way through the ship, it becomes readily apparent that something is very, very wrong. An electrical panel's casing falls off nearby, revealing a rat's nest. Ascending a staircase, Jill happens upon a very large pool of blood. Yep, this is Resident Evil all right.

A few turns, and Jill finds herself in a partially-destroyed bathroom. A lumbering monstrosity staggers out of one of the stalls and makes for Jill. Readying your weapon shifts the perspective to first-person, much like the default scheme in The Mercenaries 3D. Whether or not we'll be able to switch to third person remains to be seen. I certainly hope we will have that option.

As Jill exits the bathroom, she passes by a broken window, through which the tumult of a thunderstorm is heard. Bats and snowflakes rush in, startling Jill. The particle effects are really impressive. A struggle is heard downstairs, and Jill rushes to investigate.

Once at the bottom, Jill witnesses one of the monsters in the process of strangling one of the crewmembers. There's no possible way to save the poor wretch; the creature hurls the man into the window, leaving a huge bloodstain, and a second monster appears. The man's screams are heard as the abominations begin to devour him, and only then are you able to rush in and put the hideous things down. And that, unfortunately, is all there is to this demo.

The demo for Resident Evil: Revelations is probably the shortest one I've ever played, but I guess that's why Capcom is calling it a pilot. The release of this promising 3DS title is still quite a ways off, and there's no set date as of this writing, but we'll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
