One night while the couple is preparing to go to a work party for Greg's firm, they fall victim to a home invasion which leaves Greg clinging to life with a hole in his head, courtesy of a crowbar, and Jade having lost her baby violently. When Greg finally awakens from his coma, the pair can start to rebuild their life, but will the PTSD of the attack prevent them from achieving the happiness that they once had?
While Greg recovers at home, he begins to obsess over home security and places cameras in all of the interior rooms except the bathrooms, as well as all over the outside. Who could have wanted to do this to them, he wonders. There's his "old" family, including his ex-wife Leah, a beautiful blue-eyed blonde who still loves him very much, his overachieving son, Paul, and his very angry daughter Violet. None of them are fans of Jade, who is 20 years Greg's junior and also black, but could they be guilty of something so heinous? Maybe Greg's rival at work? Or maybe someone in Jade's life? After all, he did just recently change his will to include Jade, their unborn child, and any new children, as well as added them to his multimillion dollar life insurance policy. The more he ponders it, the more paranoid Greg becomes, and soon, he is spying on Jade using the cameras and the security app on their phones. Meanwhile, Jade gets some threatening letters in the mail, addressed to her, and she begins to wonder about her own past and those who might want to take away her happy life. She can't even share her thoughts with Greg, since he is still healing from the attack and the ensuing brain surgery, and the police think her theories are ridiculous.
Let's just say that the differences in Greg and Jade's lives throw more than a few monkey wrenches into their relationship, and the fact that Jade has hidden some secrets about her past doesn't make Greg inclined to trust her. What was once a loving relationship morphs into one filled with suspicion and danger. Can they set things right between them, even as their attackers are still walking around free? One thing's for sure, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
I really enjoyed Cate Holahan's previous book, One Little Secret, and I really liked this one as well. The ending wasn't quite as solid as the previous book, but it was still good, and when I went back and reread the ending again, I liked it even more. If you love a good suburban thriller fraught with mystery, danger, and suspicion, you'll enjoy Her Three Lives.
