Stereo Station+
Score: 90%
Developer: Hip Gear
Device Type: Audio

Function:

So, let?s assume for a minute that you actually wanted to watch a movie on your PSP. Perhaps even with another person. Now, you can?t just put the PSP three inches from your face and plug in your earphones because you have another person to worry about. How do you hold the PSP at the right angle for the entire movie? How do you both hear the movie? Can you say, ?Stereo Station+??

The Stereo Station+ features an adjustable stand, amplified speakers, controls for your movie/music, and a charging stand, all in one device.

Performance:

Hip Gear?s Stereo Station+ doesn?t include a cord. Instead, it works with the PSP?s power cord. The speakers are amplified speakers that sound clear and crisp and can really put out a lot of volume. You can now turn up the volume loud enough for friends to watch a UMD movie with you or play your PSP with arcade-quality/volume sound. A good sound system like this can really make the difference between a game?s audio sounding par and sounding like you?re there.

One thing I noticed about the speakers is that if you try to run the Stereo Station+ off of a DC source, such as the Pelican Power Brick or a car adapter, there is an irritating audible hum that comes from the speakers and makes it pretty much impossible to use for any length of time. Additionally, the volume level that the Stereo Station+ achieves with a DC source is not nearly the earth shattering level that it can reach when using the PSP?s AC Adapter (as intended).

The arm of the Stereo Station+ is nicely positional, and can be tilted forward and backward at the base and at the mount, while the arm itself can be extended. This allows for a decent range of positions, as well as the ability to flatten it for easier storage.

In my not-so-humble opinion, where the Stereo Station+ really thrives is as your non-mobile accessory for your PSP. Its home-at-home, if you will; a place where you can connect your PSP to charge it overnight, watch a movie without having to hold it or wear earphones, use it as a MP3 playing stereo system in your room, or squeeze a more arcade-like experience out of your PSP. I find I can position the PSP on the Stereo Station+ in sort of a steering wheel configuration and get less fatigued while playing PSP games; I?m not supporting it, but rather just sort of holding onto it. This setup feels kind of like the point of purchase displays you might find in stores. It?s a nice accessory to have around the house.

Features:
  • Neodymium stereo speakers for crisp highs and powerful bass
  • Charges PSP?s battery
  • Fully adjustable height and angle
  • Folds flat for easy storage
  • Uses original PSP AC adapter
  • Front-mounted buttons

Drawbacks & Problems::

The hinged mechanism that is intended to secure the PSP from the top fits into the PSP?s accessory screw mount holes, although it doesn?t screw in. It doesn?t clamp in or even snap in. It simply sits there. Just as easily as it is to swing it down onto the PSP to ?hold? it in place, it can swing back off of the PSP. This mechanism truly doesn?t contribute anything to the security of your PSP on the Stereo Station+. It would have been much better had they used screw connections, but as it is, they might have just as well not included the hinging part at all. Luckily, the sound, playback control, and power connections work together to hold the PSP pretty firmly in place.
