The first night seems like a typical young adult camping trip. Everyone is drinking and smoking pot and trying to have a good time. Jane and Sam are together, of course. Dean is the cameraman (and a "geek") so he's playing with the camera. John is determined that he can be the one to get through to the virgin Sophie, so he's trying to make out with her. While she is pushing off his advances, she sees something in the woods and goes chasing after it, so John follows her. They follow a trail to an abandoned orphanage called St. Joseph's in the middle of nowhere. Inside, they find a trail of blood in a long abandoned place. At the end of the trail, they find a mutilated sheep and hear growling. They run, but John is caught and Sophie comes face to face with the beast. After falling unconscious while trying to get away, she wakes up to find her hands and feet shackled to a bed, stripped to underwear, with the beast running around, only that is just another nightmare. When she really wakes up, she is on a bed but fully clothed and locked in a room.
While Sophie is trying to get out, her friends are trying to find her and John. They split up though and Dean goes to the car, while Jane and Sam go to the house. Dean runs into a priest, Father Thomas (Colin Tierney), who's there to kill the beast. Father Thomas knows a bit more about what is going on though as he used to work with the kids at St. Joseph's. He knows that he is on the trail of Gavin (Stephen Walters), who used to live at the orphanage. Most of the story in Splintered is just these young adults running around trying to escape the beast, but there are a couple of plot twists and there is an explanation as to the origin of the beast, which is nice.
There are a few special features available, but the Behind the Scenes is quite long with several parts. They really go through the entire film from the initial concept to every party of filming. You can see the care that they took with the special effects to make sure that there weren't any issues or problems, which means that you won't notice any flaws in the filming of Splintered. The quality of production is very well done. The video and the sounds are going to make you want to have the Blu-ray version simply for the quality. There are also Deleted Scenes available that really give a bit more information about the film. I wish that a few of them had been left in just to give more backstory to the characters, but it was really nice to have them available. Splintered is a good, solid horror movie. There's nothing really mind-blowing about it, but if you're a fan of horror, it is definitely worth watching.
