With Boris on the loose, Agents K and J (Will Smith) are experiencing a serious uptick in alien activity. After discovering Boris’s escape, J tries to delve deeper into the events that led to his capture, but is rapidly shut down by K. The two argue because Agent J just wants to help protect K, but K wants him to stay out of it. The pair quarrel by phone and when J wakes up the next morning, it is as if Agent K doesn’t exist. He seems to be the only one who even knows who K is, until he speaks with Agent O, who informs him that K died some 40 years ago. At that point, J realizes he must go back in time to stop Boris before he kills K, but more importantly, to stop an invasion by Boris’s alien race that will decimate the entire Earth.
J is in for quite the culture shock, being flung back to the 1960’s. There, he meets a young Agent K, who is played brilliantly by Josh Brolin. Although he is gruff and by-the-books, he also has a playfulness that J has never seen in the older K. As J (and the viewers) will eventually find out, it is these very events that shape Agent K into the brooding, emotionless man that J knows. J and K will find themselves protecting an alien named Griffin (Michael Stuhlbarg) who is a fantastic blend of Robin Williams as Mork, Michael Emerson (Lost) and Elijah Wood. He’s great to watch as he sees various possible futures, yet he also holds the key to Earth’s salvation.
I loved watching the banter between Agents K and J and seeing the weaponry of the 60’s was absolutely hysterical. The pair will even have a run-in with Andy Warhol (Bill Hader) and as always with the Men in Black, nothing is as it seems. They nailed the look of the 60’s perfectly, complete with a jet black Ford Galaxie for Agent K to drive. Although there’s a ton of CG in this film, it all works together perfectly to bring you the vivid world of the Men in Black like never before. You’ll even get a nice bit of the history between Agent K and Agent J as the film draws to its amazing close.
The film looks exquisite on Blu-ray and the CG and practicals meld perfectly so you get a seamless visual experience. Special features abound and include everything from featurettes on the making of the film, to the special effects, to the look of the present day vs. the 1960’s. You’ll also get a videogame called Spot the Alien, a Pitbull music video for the main song, plus featurettes breaking down key scenes. There’s a lot here and although I don’t typically care too much for special effects featurettes, these were really interesting. Also, keep in mind that the bulk of the special features are Blu-ray exclusive, so you’d do well to shell out an extra few bucks for the high-def version.
I absolutely loved Men in Black 3. It brings the trilogy full circle and is a movie I’d watch again. I laughed a lot and yes, I’ll admit it, I cried a little. The acting is fantastic with Josh Brolin channeling Tommy Lee Jones like you wouldn’t believe. If you want to watch a fun movie with a sci-fi vibe, check out Men in Black 3 and you won’t be disappointed.
