Get Digitally Fit in 2011

Product: Getting Fit With Consumer Electronics

Looking at early sales numbers and talking to GameStop employees, a lot of you bough Kinects and other fitness games for Christmas. Now that the Holidays are over, it's time to break them out of the box and get to work on your yearly New Year's resolution to get in shape and lose weight.

A new study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) shows that using your new digital toys to keep might help keep you motivated. According to research, motivation is prime factor (54% of consumers) in why people don't stick to their goal of getting in shape. Research also showed that nearly 74% of people tried to do exercise without any sort of guidance.

According to research, fitness technologies like WiiFit, EA Sports Active 2 and YourShape Fitness can help stem the tide by offering lifestyle feedback and helping people set reasonable, realistic goals.

"Fitness technologies can play a significant role in motivating consumers," said Rhonda Daniel, manager of market research at CEA. "Compared to consumers who are not using fitness technologies, consumers who use these devices view exercise more positively, and are more likely to enjoy exercising and to view it as important to their health."

Speaking from personal experience, I've noticed a slight change in my life since starting regimes with EA Sports Active 2 and YourShape. I haven't dropped a massive amount of weight, but like I said in my review of EA Sports Active 2, I've noticed an uptick in my energy levels and have really cut back on the amount of food I used to eat.

"The demand for fitness technologies is wide-ranging, and a variety of technologies are available - from standalone devices such as digital weight scales, pedometers and fitness companions, to software programs and applications, to peripherals and games for gaming systems," said Daniel. "Additionally, many devices consumers already own, such as smartphones and MP3 players, are now equipped with components and capabilities that can be used for fitness, including GPS, pedometers and accelerometers."

Regardless of which technology you go with, go for it. After all, I'm sure there are other resolutions you'd love to keep putting of for 2012.
