The last time gamers saw Gabe Logan, he was on trial by Vincent Hadden, the Secretary of State, who was convinced Logan and his group were terrorists. Gabe was eventually able to get off trial and the Syphon Filter virus was finally destroyed, or was it? As it turns out, outbreaks of a deadly new mutation of the virus are appearing all over the globe, and all the evidence points towards a multi-national corporation being the culprit behind the new outbreak, and apparently the cause of the whole conspiracy. As if that weren't enough, Chechnyan Rebels are reportedly selling the virus to other terrorists who have made Moscow their next target - an attack that could lead to World War III. In order to combat these threats, Gabe Logan's newly reformed agency is looking for new recruits, namely you. Syphon Filter: Omega Strain is the series' first leap onto the PS2, and it looks like Sony Computer Entertainment America is pulling out all the stops to make this one of the best gaming experiences on the system, online or off.
One of the more intriguing aspects of the game is the lack of a main character. While Gabe and other characters in the Syphon Filter universe will certainly show up, the main character in the game will be an agent you create. Players will be able to customize nearly every aspect of their character's look, right down to their uniform and equipment.
Equipment will include over 100 weapons and gadgets, including the ability to wield dual pistols. As players progress through the game, they will be able to unlock new, even better, weapons. Exactly how this will play out in the overall story is still shrouded in mystery, but it's definitely a very unique approach and should be a welcome addition to the action genre.
Players can expect the same action-packed missions and story line from the last three games, only now with a new twist. Utilizing the Sony Network Adapter, as well as the PS2 headset, players will be able to go online with Syphon Filter: Omega Strain, and play through each of the game's 17 missions with up to four of their friends. The strategic possibilities this opens up are endless, and could prove to be another solid title for the PS2's growing online library. There's no word whether or not other multiplayer games from the previous Syphon Filter's will also find their way online. Look for Syphon Filter: Omega Strain later this year.
