Space Invaders

Graphics & Sound:
Definitely a vast improvement from the original Space Invaders, but its still a 2D game. Don't be expecting anything along the lines of Soul Reaver here, but the backgrounds are beautifully rendered and the characters are nicely detailed. Explosions and such look good and the sound effects are appropriate. There's a cool FMV intro that makes reference to the original game and old school Space Invaders fans will get a kick out of this. But you won't be buying this game for its graphics, but for its spectacular gameplay.

Gameplay:
For those of you who are old enough to remember the original Space Invaders, and the bruised thumbs that come along with hours spent in addictive play - get ready. They're baa-ack! Space Invaders is back and better than ever. Prepare to wile away many hours once you get your hands on this one. You'll find yourself saying - just one more level, one more game. The concept is simple - various aliens line up in a row, working their way down to crush you. You shoot them all to clear the level. Sounds easy? It is, at first. Hehe. New additions include bosses at the end of each planet (world), improved graphics/sound and tougher and more varied alien enemies. If you liked the original, you'll love the new Space Invaders. And the original is lurking somewhere on the CD too...

Difficulty:
Remember the limitations of the old Atari version? You could only shoot one blast and after it hit it's target or left the screen, you could shoot again. Well, how nostalgic - Activision has retained this feature. To get around it, shoot as many UFO's as you can for powerups, and hope you get a double shot. The more levels you clear, the tougher it gets (duh). But it only makes you want to play it more and more and more.

Game Mechanics:
They advance. You shoot. Not too much to it, but some strategy is required. Towards the middle of the planet (world), the screen flashes an announcement for an incoming ship. But don't go run and hide - its really just a UFO shoot-a-thon bonus level. Use it to rack up extra points and lives... and perfect your timed shot. Whether you get it for nostalgia or plain old kick-ass gameplay, I highly recommend Space Invaders for all ages.
