It's no secret that Gearbox's flagship series doesn't take itself too seriously. Between fall-out-of-your-seat funny writing and level/enemy design that would befit a criminally-insane Willy Wonka, the series is memorable for all the right reasons. Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep is the best Borderlands expansion yet. It's the funniest, most creative, and most shockingly poignant the series has ever been.

Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep takes place exclusively in a fantasy world dreamed up by everyone's favorite Pandoran psychopath-in-training, Tiny Tina. She's roped three of the Vault Hunters from the original Borderlands into playing a game of Bunkers & Badasses with her. Tiny Tina as Dungeon Master. Those four words are this expansion's strongest selling point; as Tina comes up with new rules, limitations, and surprises on the fly, these changes are instantly reflected in the world of the game. But while the story of the game-within-a-game remains bonkers in its own special Borderlands 2 way, the story takes its time addressing how Tina must cope with the absence of Roland, who was murdered by Handsome Jack during the events of Borderlands 2. For a character as thoroughly nutty as Tiny Tina, it's nice to see that the writers were able to take this road with her; it's a unique way to illustrate the grieving process.

But you're probably more interested in the laughs and the murder, right? Of course you are. Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep is Borderlands 2 in top form. You journey through Tina's off-kilter fantasy land, completing quests that heavily mock hot-button fantasy properties like A Song of Ice and Fire, Dark Souls, and more. However, you must frequently contend with the fact that the individuals who are rolling the dice and making decisions aren't stable. So when you reach the throne of one of your supposed greatest allies and Brick decides to punch him to death, you have no choice but to go along with it. And its here that Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep is at its best.

Gameplay isn't really any different, though the ever-changing context is always reason enough to return to the game. Eridium Shrines allow you to pay Eridium for temporary buffs. They're hard to say no to, especially since everyone's probably got more Eridium than they know what to do with.

If you've ever considered yourself a fan of Borderlands, you owe it to yourself to play this expansion. It's the best of all eight by far; its superlative writing and intoxicating sense of style elevate it above the rest. They've obviously saved the best for last.
