Costumes:
If you’re going to be a star in Hollywood, or even your hometown, you will need new clothing. The Sims 3: Movie Stuff aims to help you (or at least help your Sim) in your quest to become someone new, a star! There are three very different styles that you can choose to dress your Sims up as: superheroes (and supervillians), cowboys, and horror movie participants.

All of the new clothing for both sexes can be found under Outfits or Shoes. There are no new loose tops, bottoms, or accessories. For women, as in most stores, there are more choices available than there are for the men. There are no new outfits for toddlers. For children, there is a cowboy (or cowgirl) and a superhero costume you can get. For teen girls, you have a few choices. There is one option for cowgirl in three different colors. It’s more of a fancy dress rather than anything I think of for a cowgirl, but you’ll have to grow up before you get more fun costumes. The horror costume (in three colors) is made of leather and buckles and reminds me almost of one of the Hellraiser characters. You have two different superhero costumes, each in three colors. They’re quite colorful, but they do look like hero costmes. Once your teen becomes a young adult, there are quite a few more choices available. There are 12 different styles each with three color options ranging from prairie woman to vampire to barely dressed superhero. You also have 5 different shoe styles with color options, so you can mix and match. I don’t think it’s fair that once you become an elder, you have to give up the sexier clothes. You have a lot fewer choices as elder.

For the teen boys, you have one choice for each genre. Once you get to young adult, you will have 9 choices total. I know it’s less than the women, but it’s still pretty good. You have two western outfits, two horror choices, and 5 superhero outfits. The good news is that the men’s costumes are more identifiable as to who they’re imitating. There is one that looks almost exactly like Dr. Evil and on a totally humorous note, one very similar to Dr. Frankenfurter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I know that right there is going to make someone go buy The Sims 3: Movie Stuff!

Coiffeurs:
Another important part of being a movie star is the hairstyles. How many times have we seen a star make a hairstyle so popular that everyone goes out and gets their hair cut just like that? The Sims 3: Movie Stuff seeks to make sure your Sims can influence their worlds the same way. There are no styles for toddlers, but once you get to child, you can get a superhero hairstyle with accessories that is a cap. Teens all the way through elder women have 9 different styles to choose from. Three of them are just plain hair without major accessories. The rest have hats and ribbons and other such things. There is even a style with the "tiny hat" craze that has become popular in some areas recently. I’m not sure what purpose a hat that doesn’t cover your head serves, but I guess it is fashionable!

Teen boys have fours hair styles. Once they grow up to adult, they will get one more. I guess the hair style that looks most like it would fit with Dr. Frankenfurter isn’t appropriate for a teen. It almost looks like a strange mardi gras mask. Of course, you have the obligatory cowboy hat available. There is also a hat that looks straight out of a monster movie. It has a clear dome over the brain so that you can see the brain underneath. It would go well with the Dr. Evil costume.

Sets:
If you’re going to turn your house into a Hollywood set, then you’ll need items to set the stages. The range of items available is not as much as I would like, but what is there is amusing. The easiest place to create a movie star set is the bedroom. If you’re looking for a horror set especially, this is the place. You can get a creepy looking bed with an awesome serpent end table. Unfortunately, there is no horror style dresser. You can get a western bed and dresser, but no end table. You can get a superhero dresser and wardrobe, but nothing else. It would have been nice to have a full bedroom set for any one style. Over in the living room, you can get a really cool "Spinderella’s Coffee Table" but you’ll have to match it with other styles of seating. Once again, I would have loved to have been able to pull a full set of something together. I did find that you can pretty easily mix the horror collections with the items from The Sims 3: Supernatural. I also found that there are some great matches in The Sims 3: Generations collection for the cowboy stuff. So yes, you can make your full sets if you want, but you’ll have to pull pieces from previous games to really get it complete.

The Big Picture:
Overall, I would say The Sims 3: Movie Stuff is probably my least favorite so far. I really love some of the pieces in the collections, especially the horror stuff, but there’s just not enough to this expansion to say that it’s really complete. To really be able to style your house up right, you need more items. While there is lighting added, there is really nothing new for the kitchen, dining room, etc. I could easily see something like a new western style bar for the dining room or a whole horror kitchen dripping blood. Granted, the new bathroom items did make me laugh. The outhouse is hilarious and yet very handy! Basically, what is there is nice but it’s just not enough.

Another thing that I noticed is that there aren’t any new lots. They could easily have added a community lot that was a garden that looked like an empty set of each type. The superhero landscape might have been a bit more difficult to pull off, but a western garden or a horror garden would have been very easy to do.

To sum it up, I like what is there on The Sims 3: Movie Stuff, but I’m not sure that it’s quite enough to justify the cost. A few more features would have made it feel much more robust!
