Xplorer FX
Score: 100%
Developer: Blaze
Device Type: Accessory

Function:

Blaze and Future Console Design have outdone themselves. Imagine a single device that takes care of all of your cheating needs with a user friendly interface, and extra features. All-in-one immediately springs to mind. If there?s a code out there, it works with the Xplorer FX. If there?s not, the FX can help you locate your own. If you?re a frequent reader, let me tell you this to save you time. Don?t bother with the rest of this review. Just go buy it. If you need more information or you just want to pass some time, then go ahead and read the rest...

The Xplorer FX adds a multitude of enhancements to your PSX. It allows you to use cheat cartridge -- type game codes, hold up to 10,000 of them, and it comes with hundreds already pre-loaded. The Xplorer FX also allows you to interact with your PSX using a computer. With a printer cable and the free downloadable software, you can save screenshots and your saved games to your hard drive. However, if you?re not interested in saving screen shots, you might not even need to hook it up to your computer -- for backing up your saved games, there?s a utility that acts like a ?vault? and will store copies of your saved games inside the FX. When you want to use it again, just dump it back to a memory card and Voila! -- reconstituted ?save game.? Want to make your OWN cheat codes? No problem! The Xplorer FX lets you stop a game IN PROGRESS and use the game trainer to hunt down possible code locations, and then lets you set the value to whatever you choose and return to the game in progress. Whereas the Xploder Professional has the ?X-Assist? which is used to search for codes, the Xplorer FX lets you use a controller to select options from on-screen menus while the game is frozen in the background. This (by definition) is ?sweet.?

That?s it, right? Nope -- the FX also grabs sound samples. You play a game for a while, then reset and go back to the Xplorer FX multimedia menu and choose sound playback, and you can listen to various sounds captured from the game. You can even change their pitch! There?s also a feature which allows you to view stationary image files from a PSX game. Music CDs? Yep, the FX has an audio player that looks great and allows you to choose different types of display you want for the output. Furthermore, the Xplorer FX also has the ability to be upgraded at a later date, via upgrade CDs or memory cards from Blaze, so they might improve it even AFTER you get it... and you won?t miss out!!! My suggestion? If you have a serial port on your PlayStation, you need to have an Xplorer FX.

Performance:

Blaze?s Xplorer FX itself is very simple to operate. There is only one external control: an On/Off switch. When navigating through the on-screen menus, the menus are self explanatory and user friendly. For instance, the Full Motion Video viewing feature not only allows you to list all of the FMVs and choose them individually by name, but also has a feature that allows you to ?preview? each of the FMVs in a series of boxes on your screen in the same way that high end televisions handle a Picture-in-Picture channel scan. (Sweet!)

Unlike the Xploder Professional, the FX allows you to do everything through the controller. In fact, you can choose a button combination in the FX setup menu and use it to ?pause? the game and go to the in-game Xplorer menu. In the middle of the game, you can use the cheat training feature to search for values and help you find a code. The Xplorer FX even lets you change the value in the memory location once you?ve located it, and then return to the game. There are cheat cartridges and there are cheat cartridges, but the Xplorer FX raises the standards to new heights!

All you?ll need for the Xplorer FX is a PlayStation with a parallel port. NOTE: I have not personally observed this yet, but I have heard reports that the newest ($99) PlayStations will NO LONGER have this port. Make sure yours does before purchasing the Xplorer (or any game enhancement cartridge).

Installation of Blaze?s Xplorer FX is simple. First, turn off your PlayStation. Simply remove the panel covering the PlayStation?s parallel port (that?s the hard part), store the removed cover in the indented slot provided on the Xplorer FX (neat, huh?), and carefully insert the Xplorer FX into the parallel port. Finally, make sure the FX?s On/Off switch is in the ?On? position, then turn your PlayStation on. You will be greeted by the Xplorer FX?s on-screen interface.

Okay, so it doesn?t do the homework thing. You?ll graduate and it won?t matter anymore. The games will still be there, begging to be ?xplored.? The Xplorer FX is just the cart for the job. Whereas when you get out of school you?ll never need math again, cheating is a skill you can put to practical use every day.
