SwitchWay - iPhone 3G
Score: 90%
Developer: Speck
Device Type: Accessory

Function:

Speck's SwitchWay is a multi-directional portfolio/wallet case for the iPhone 3G.

Performance:

When I first began using the SwitchWay, I was a bit skeptical on whether or not it was just gimmicky or actually functional. Having a case that opens both horizontally and vertically, achieved by simply turning the case over, seemed like it might have some issues with reliability and security. However, after using it for several weeks, I am very happy with the functionality of the SwitchWay. Constructed of nylon and leather, it has a nice modern look, without being gaudy or garish, and a very durable feel. Access flaps are magnetic, allowing the case to be easily opened. The case is designed to hold the iPhone 3G quite snugly within, but conveniently placed finger openings allow for easy removal of the phone when needed. The interior is a nice, soft material that does not scratch or mar the surface of the phone. The profile of the case is slim enough to fit into a pocket without too much "bulging." Barring a few small details (see below), the SwitchWay is an outstanding case that I would not hesitate in recommending.

Features:
  • Works Both Horizontally and Vertically Without Modification
  • Solid, Durable Construction
  • Access to Docking and Headphone Connections

Drawbacks & Problems::

Now, for the "few small details." As I mentioned earlier, I did not find many problems with the SwitchWay. The main problem I had was that the belt clips, which the case flaps overlap, are not easily attached to a belt or strap. Because of the design, it is difficult to get the clip open wide enough to fit over a normal leather belt. The upside of this is that once you do manage to get it attached, you absolutely do not have to worry about it falling off.

The only other problem I had came when using it in conjunction with another Speck product, the SeeThru hardshell protective casing. I had no issues using both products while the SwitchWay was horizontal, but when I tried using them together in a vertical position, it became difficult to insert and remove the phone.

Neither of these drawbacks is sufficient enough to alter my recommendation of this product.
