XL USB Dock Cable
Score: 95%
Developer: Griffin Technology
Device Type: Power

Function:

If the idea of someone getting excited about a power cord strikes you as odd, you probably don't own an Apple mobile device. Yes, they're sleekly designed and ultra-portable, but they come with stingy little power cords! The solution to ease your teeny, aesthetically-pleasing power cord woes is now here from Griffin Technology. The good folks at Griffin realize that some of us occasionally sit more than 6-12 inches from our Mac (or a wall outlet) when trying to work on our device while connected. Lengthy battery charges notwithstanding, the XL USB Dock Cable is a timely addition to your iPhone, iPod, or iPad. It serves up 10 feet of 2.1 amp cable that can connect you to power or your desktop rig, so you don't have to wait out those recharging or docking moments. There's the need for the USB-to-wall dongle that came packed in with your device, in order to wall charge, but for USB charging and docking, you'll have everything you need right out of the box.

Performance:

We tested this with our iPad and it worked like a champ. In our case, the iPad travels between work and home, and needs charging. It doesn't sync on the work computer, which means there's little point in docking. There's also the reality of my computer for work having every USB port taken up by some sort of attachment. The natural choice once XL USB Dock Cable entered my life was to bring it to work, while leaving the thin cord Apple shipped with my iPad at home, where I actually sync my device. Cords like this don't measure gauge in the way we do with regular extension cords, but this is like a smaller cousin of the 10-gauge cord I keep around for times when I need a cord that can run something like a jackhammer without melting down... The heft of this cord makes it feel incredibly well made and sturdy, which we tested a bit by lugging it around from backpack to office to backpack again.

The standard-issue XL USB Dock Cable is ready-made for USB charging or syncing to your desktop/laptop, but allows a huge range of movement if that is something you need or want. With the addition of that little USB adaptor that came with the iPad, we were able to charge from a standard wall receptacle. Another key difference between this and the iPad original cable is the bit that slots directly into the bottom of the device. The factory cord features a very slim, low profile bit of plastic that you push or pull to engage the cord. XL USB Dock Cable sports a larger, but similarly shaped, plastic mount that feels much easier to manage. This is especially true for folks with larger fingers and hands, who will feel like they're plucking a little flower every time they work with the factory cord.

Drawbacks & Problems::

There's very little we'd change about this device, other than making it fire-proof and coating it in armor... Okay, all Toughbook jokes aside, we can say that there's very little to find fault with here. XL USB Dock Cable does exactly what it claims, and the only possible issue might be added bulk in your carry-on or carry case. In our scenario, the iPad isn't exactly a light device, and we carry it to work in a backpack, so a bit of extra weight doesn't really matter. Compared to the composition of my laptop cable, complete with an ugly black box bridging two cord connections, the XL USB Dock Cable looks positively svelte. Once you have the experience of plugging in from several feet further than was possible using the factory cord, you'll likely be a convert. We've used this every day since we got it, earning the XL USB Dock Cable a place on a very short list of must-have accessories for the iPad.
