Function:

The GuitarConnect Cord aims to turn your iPod or iPad into a functional effects box. It also can provide the same function for a keyboard or bass supplied with a 1/4" plug. It makes for a neat addition to your performing equipment, but it also fits the bill nicely for practice sessions. A branching cord fitted with a standard 1/8" jack can be plugged into any amplification source, or it can be used for listening to yourself on headphones. Many players want a way to authentically rehearse without blowing out the neighbors, who also can't be bothered to lug their amp around. Folks that have purchased small, practice amps for exactly this purchase will be the core audience for GuitarConnect Cord from Griffin Technology. It may be a bit overkill for players that have amassed a large collection of pedals, but there may be instances when you want to play with sounds here when you can't reach your equipment. Plus, when pedals are installed on a board for stage performances, they tend to become a bit unwieldy, eh? The GuitarConnect Cord is perfect for new performers that don't have a large collection of pedals yet and want a chance to feel out how it will change their sound.

Performance:

The most noticeable aspect of the GuitarConnect Cord is its study construction. This is a no-fooling cord that you'd be happy to have during a performance, as long as you don't yank or bend the 1/8" connectors too much. Where things could easily go wrong is in the part that fits into the guitar, keyboard, or bass. It's a sturdy plug, backed by cable that doesn't feel like it's going to peel off or get frayed and scuffed. There's enough length to allow for some room from your amp, but live performers may need to rethink their setup on stage, if they tend to run around. Ideal for practice sessions when you can stay close in on your gear. We didn't do side-by-side comparisons between this and a standard cable, but that might be an issue if you have something you're really fond of and don't want to fool with a new cord on stage. Again, the live performance aspects of GuitarConnect Cord could be overly hyped, but it is a serviceable cord considering it's going to spend 100% of its life plugged into your iPhone or iPad.

Drawbacks & Problems::

Not a problem so much as a dependency, but you'll need to download one of the apps that make the effects, such as iShred LIVE. These apps provide a few basic pedals, but you'll need to purchase others. The basic effects are good, but we would have liked to see more opportunities to custom-design a pedal sound. At some point, if this thing catches on, we'll no doubt see user-generated pedals out there. For right now, there's a more proprietary approach being taken. Like any software or hardware, support from the developer is key to building maximum value for GuitarConnect Cord. The only other items on our wishlist would be a few options for different colors (black, mostly), more connectors for niche devices, and an Android app that takes advantage of this functionality. Griffin definitely went a bit out of the box for this one, but in a way that really extends the functionality of these mobile devices.
