NOCC: One Scream at a Time
Company: Scare for a Cure
Product: Scare for a Cure
Scare for a Cure is a charity formed to help promote breast cancer awareness and fund research into finding a cure for the disease. What caught our eye was the couple of twists involved in the charity's origins.

We first learned of Scare for a Cure at Wizard World: New Orleans Comic Con when we spied Jarrett "The Defuser" Crippen at Scare for a Cure's booth. For those not familiar with Crippen, he was the second season winner of Stan Lee's Sci-Fi Channel reality TV series, Who Wants to be be a Super Hero, a show several Game Vortex staff members followed regularly while it was on (as is evident by our interview with the first season's winner, Matthew "Feedback" Atherton). As it turns out, Crippen, along with his wife, started the charity by putting on a haunted house in their back yard and charging neighbors, with the proceeds going to fund research for breast cancer.

The haunted house evolved when it joined up with what started as Richard Garriott's haunted mansion at Britannia Manor. While the haunted mansion is no longer in Lord British's hands, and it has evolved into an "extreme, full contact, interactive haunted house adventure," it, combined with the enthusiasm of the Crippens and their desire to raise money for a cure for breast cancer to make a major event for the Austin, Texas area.

While sitting through several Q&A Panels at New Orleans Comic Con, we had the pleasure to talk with The Defuser several times between sessions as he was the moderator for many of the panels in one of the show's meeting rooms. During these between-session discussions, we learned that the staff of Scare for a Cure also brings a bra to the conventions they attend and have the various guest speakers and stars sign it (usually those guests that fit a theme) in order to put it up in an auction and provide just a bit more money for their causes. For New Orleans Comic Con, the group is putting together a Buffy-themed bra since this particular Con has enough Buffy actors guest speaking to be dubbed "BuffyFest."

Scare for a Cure looks to be a great organization that takes a fresh approach to collecting money for their cause. If you are in the Austin area, you should look into attending one of their haunted mansions, or possibly even volunteering to help. This is a very promising charity that, like all good charities, needs as much support as it can get.
