OUYA Launches
Company: OUYA
Product: OUYA
Heard of OUYA? It's a new kind of videogame console and it launches today in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom. What's unique about the OUYA? Well, for starters it is launching with 178 games and apps available right now. Further, everyone who buys an OUYA console has the ability to get the Developer information needed to start you on your way to making your own content. If that's of interest to you, great... if not, just think of how many developers are going to be working on releasing games for the system, with this data freely available. (There are already 17,000 registered developers for the system.)

At launch, there are games for fans of racing, trivia, RPG games... and a variety of more indie genre-bending games. Mind you, not all of the developers are indies you haven't heard of; the trivia game I mentioned is a version of the riotously funny You Don't Know Jack and the RPG I mentioned, Chronoblade was made by the creator of the Grand Theft Auto franchise... and is an OUYA exclusive. Other companies supporting OUYA include well-known publishers, including Sega and Square Enix, familiar favorite game developers such as Double Fine Productions and Tripwire Interactive as well as up-and-coming indie creators like Matt Thorson and Adam Spragg.

The OUYA also serves as an Internet-enabled entertainment platform, supporting streaming services such as Twitch.tv, TuneIn, and Plex right out the box.

On OUYA, gamers can try out every game with no obligation to buy, and new games are uploaded constantly. Games are ranked based on the "fun factor," not revenue or number of downloads, with all games and apps digitally delivered, there are no discs to buy, no fumbling for a disc to play your game and you own your games forever. This also allows a smaller hardware size and price, as neither the cost nor the form factor have to worry about including a disc drive.

"It's incredible to think that a little under a year ago OUYA was just an idea -- we wanted to do something completely new in console gaming: build a $99 game console, with no discs to buy, open to all developers, and affordable to all gamers. Today, OUYA is real. Console gaming has never needed something new more than it does now."
- Julie Uhrman, CEO and co-founder, OUYA
