It was really only a matter of time before we saw a real-time strategy game built around the war on terrorism. Will of Steel is going to be just that; an RTS with a historical basis on the ongoing war. Since the two major fronts in the war are currently Afghanistan and Iraq, it is unsurprising that most of the missions will take place in these locales.

From the preview version I played, it seems that the game will incorporate some unique combinations of new gameplay techniques and mechanics. Just as the war on terrorism is as different from previous wars like Vietnam was from World War II, Will of Steel looks to stand out as a fairly unique RTS. This will be a more realistic style of RTS, far more similar to games like Blitzkrieg then Starcraft. It will feature real units and equipment, and the gameplay will focus on a deeper, more complex strategy than ?overrun the enemy with numbers.?

In addition to standard things such as formations, marching styles, scouts, and engineers, Will of Steel will also incorporate the unique difficulty of handling urban warfare. One of the missions I played had a very simple guideline in it: do not damage any of the local mosques. I would imagine things such as minimizing collateral damage and civilian casualties will be frequent problems. Surprise attacks also feature more prominently in Will of Steel than in previous games I have played. If you aren?t careful to secure every square inch of an area, the one side street you didn?t explore might suddenly turn into a huge militia that devastates your forces from behind.

Be on the lookout for Will of Steel sometime in Spring 2005.
