Blade and Sword: Bold New Blade

It's you against a world of demons and creatures in the RPG Blade and Sword. You take on the role of either a large and gruff barbarian, a quick and agile woman or a slender and skillful longswordsman, as you travel across ancient Asia in hopes of bringing the roaming evil to an end.

Blade and Sword gives you control over weaponry and magic while displaying stunningly beautiful scenery and detailed villains. The isometric view gives you great visibility to help you fight the corpses, evil wolves and boar demons. The game is designed like some of the older RPGs. It is just you against the world (with the exception of some villagers and a few helpers that have somehow managed to survive in the wild). After taking out a number of demons, your level increases, thus making it easier to dispatch your foes. You can also have up to 12 items ready to use at your fingertips (activated by the 1-6 number keys and F1-F6 functions keys).

When battle approaches, it tends to become a fury of right and left mouse clicks as you hack, slash and kick your way through the ranks. It isn't rare to run into a band of enemies all waiting for you to jump into the fray -- but if you are smart enough, you will be able to take them out one by one - or two or three at a time if they are positioned just right. Either way, the battle scenes are spectacular and full of energy.

Blade and Sword puts you in ancient Asia where the Emperor Jo has just been defeated by his rival Emperor Wu. After Jo's defeat, the landscape has been overrun by demons of many shapes and sizes - a lot of them taking the forms of possessed animals. Defeating these creatures often yields potions (for health), gold, blades or other precious items that can either be used in battle or for trade.

This game has an old-school feel with newer and visually stunning landscapes and characters - once it comes out, I predict it will be a hit.

Whiplash Interactive and Pixel Software plan to release Blade and Sword on December 1 of 2003.
