Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure: Waxing Comedic

We recently tried out the demo for a Kickstarter project called Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure. While the game only presented a few puzzles and scenes, it does a great job of conveying the feel that the developers at Stuck in the Attic are going for.

While Gibbous is based off of H.P. Lovecraft's work, it doesn't actually fit into the horror genre. Instead, picture a setting befitting a Lovecraftian story, and populate it with characters that would feel more at home in an old-school LucasArts game like Sam & Max: Hit the Road. In fact, a lot of aspects of Gibbous remind me of that game, in particular.

Buzz is a college student who has come into possession of the Necronomicon, and somehow, its power has been released. How much damage has been done? We really don't know based on what the demo gives us. What we do know is that his pet cat, Kitteh, now has the ability to speak.

Kitteh is actually one of the reasons I get a strong Sam & Max vibe from the game. While the demo doesn't have Buzz using the sidekick in quite the same gratuitous manner, she is still a source of banter, mocking comments, and can be used as an inventory item.

The Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure demo seems to be at a very early part of the game's story. Buzz already has the fabled Necronomicon and it has already changed Kitteh so that the cat can speak, but it doesn't look like much more has happened. The demo starts off in front of Buzz's dorm where he meets a young girl with an unusual doll, but really wants her other doll ... which has somehow made its way to the top of a store sign at least one story up.

As you explore the dark streets around Buzz's dorm, you will also meet a young lady sitting at a park bench, an odd cabbie waiting for his next fare, and eventually, an unusual voodoo practitioner who feels very heavily influenced by the Monkey Island games.

While the demo isn't especially long, it does show that the developers have worked out their art style, character and object interaction, and how some of their puzzles will have some amusing twists to them.

At this point, Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure has met its funding goal on Kickstarter, so while a release date hasn't been announced yet, potential fans can still use the Kickstarter page, as well as the game's home page, to get a hands-on feel for what Gibbous promises to bring to the table. The demo has options for Windows, Mac and Linux, so most interested gamers should find a platform where they can try the demo.
