Ninetail: Half Truths & Hand Grenades

Metal is a genre that encompasses so many different styles and forms that if I just tell you Ninetail is a metal band, that really doesn't say much. But if I tell you Ninetail's new album Half Truths & Hand Grenades is a hard-hitting, almost industrial sounding album very much in the vein of Fear Factory (the drums especially remind me of Fear Factory), then you'll probably have a lot better idea of what they sound like. Or even better, I recommend that you just visit their site and check them out for yourselves. These 6 guys, Don Belch, Chris Appenzeller, Chris Evan, J. William Heitmann, Griff, and Greg Weber, really know how to play aggressive metal!

Half Truths & Hand Grenades has 14 songs and 2 videos on it for your listening and viewing pleasure. While there are none that are anywhere near slow, they are still varied in their sound. You don't feel like you're listening to the same song over and over again, which is a really good thing! Sometimes part of the song (or the whole thing in the case of "Karma") contains voice clips that really reminded me of some of Ministry's old stuff. Anyway, these clips really help set the tone for the songs, so I enjoyed having them there. This is all the non-musical information you're going to get about the music since there are no lyrics printed in the CD case. That's something that I really do miss just because it's not always easy to understand what bands are saying. Luckily, Ninetail isn't that hard to understand most of the time, so you don't really need the lyrics in front of you. It would just have been a nice extra.

Half Truths & Hand Grenades starts off very strong with my personal favorite song on the album, "Half Truths & Hand Grenades." Technically, "Karma" is first on the album, but it's more of an intro than it is a song. From here on out, the intensity doesn't let up until the album ends. A lot of the songs have a decidedly political theme to them, especially if you listen to all the voice clips. It's not so political that it will offend either side, though. I think they have done a wonderful job of balancing getting a message out without alienating anyone who doesn't agree with that message.

If that isn't enough for you, there are also 2 videos available on the DVD, for "Half Truth & Hand Grenades" and "Tales of a Madman." Both of them are scenes from live shows, so if you live too far away from where these guys play, you can still get a sense of the live experience on the CD. Ninetail's Half Truths & Hand Grenades is a very good metal album. If you like loud and aggressive metal, I highly recommend you check these guys out today!
